Pageant of Sport

This event will be held on New Milton War Memorial Recreation Ground on
Saturday 21st July 2012, with demonstrations by various sports clubs
in the area plus other attractions, in celebration of the Olympic Games
returning to the U.K.

This event is being organised by representatives from the Town Council, Town
Partnership, Residents Association, Lions and Rotary Clubs.

We are appealing to all the sports clubs in the town and surrounding
area to come and enjoy some light refreshments while attending an informal
presentation and discussion at Ashley Rugby Club on Thursday 22nd
September at 7pm. We really want their feedback and ideas on how to ensure this
is an exciting event to celebrate the Olympic Games next summer, which will
engage and enthuse the community and encourage them to participate.

Any enquiries should be directed to Theresa Elliott, Assistant Town Clerk on
01425 619120.

Mayoral engagements July – August

Following my presentation to full Town Council on August 1st I have now made details of my presentation slides available online as below for my Mayors blog from July.

The Scouts AGM – 1st July 2011

Claude and I spent a very pleasant couple of hours in a packed Scout Hut with the 3rd New Forest South (1st Milton) Scout Group at their AGM where awards were presented to Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. A BBQ followed the meeting. The Trustees Annual Report reminded us that the planting of new trees in addition to the building of new garages this year has greatly improved the grounds of the Scout Hut. It was good to see Cllr Geoff
Blunden among the parents.

New Milton Eagles -  2nd / 3rd July 6-a-side Tournament

The weather was fantastic when Claude and attended the New Milton Eagles 6-a-side boys and girls Tournament held on Ballard School Sports Field on the 2nd and 3rd July. I was asked to give out the trophies. Teams came from as far as Corfe Mullen to participate in this excellent well run annual event. A big thank you to all those who give so
generously of their time to these young people.

Speech Day, Ballard School – 8th July 2011

It was a great pleasure being invited to Ballard School Speech Day by headmaster, Mr Alastair Reid. Also in attendance was the Mayor of Lymington, Cllr Anna Rostand. The speaker, Mr Adrian Hayes, is a double record-breaking polar explorer, keynote speaker, corporate coach and sustainability ambassador and a former Gurkha army officer. Adrian Hayes grew up at Busketts Lawn Hotel at Woodlands in the New Forest. His achievements
include setting a Guinness World record for reaching the Earth’s “3 Poles” – walking all the way to the north pole, South Pole and summiting Mt Everest – in the shortest period of time in history (19 months and 3 days), which he completed in December 2007, becoming one of only 18 people ever to achieve the feat. He holds a second Guinness World record for the longest unsupported Artic expedition in history (kite assisted), the 2,200 mile south to north crossing of the Greenland ice cap, which he completed in 2009 with two
Canadian colleagues. The documentary of the expedition “Adrian Hayes – the Greenland Quest” will be broadcast on the 20th August on the National Geographical channel.

Other highlights apart from the privilege of awarding a cup were the Senior
Vocal Ensemble singing Panis Angelicus by Cesar Franck. Charlotte Hulme
performing the poem ‘From a Distance’ and the Senior Chamber Choir perform
‘Scarborough Fair’.

Pedal Car Grand Prix – 10th July

Pedal Car Grand Prix. The Jubilee Committee have firmly put New Milton on the map with this bi-annual event attended and enjoyed by thousands. This year BBC CBBs filmed two of their presenters who entered the race. I understand it will be on our screens in January. This year for the first time we had a hospitality suite run to perfection by a team of ladies
from Lions. An enormous amount of work goes into this event and we are enormously grateful to the Jubilee Committee and all those who help out to make this event so special.

New Forest Disability Service Annual Public Meeting – 12th July

New Forest Disability Information Service. It was so interesting visiting the New Forest Disability (New Forest Diz) Annual Punblic Meeting, in the Community Centre, and learning all about the work of these wonderful volunteers. County Councilor, Felicity Hindson, the Executive Member for Adult Social Care in Hampshire was the guest speaker, Felicity was inspirational given the difficult time we are going through with resources.

You might like to know New Forest Diz’s mission statement: ‘to empower people living with disabilities in the New Forest and its surrounding area to enable them to lead active and fulfilling lives integrated in society’. Their Head Office is 6 Osborne Road, New Milton. Helpline: 01425 628750.

Oakhaven Hospice – exhibition of collages – 15th July

Graham Flexman, our Town Clerk, accompanied me to Oakhaven Hospice’s fund raising Exhibition of Collages, in the Community Centre in Lymington. They were very beautiful. Oakhaven Hospice requires an awful lot of money to keep going in what is now a competitive market for our money. You might have noticed that their Lymington shop has moved into much larger premises which has improved their sales quite considerably. Next year the New Milton shop will have a make over.

Bashley village flower show & craft fair – 16th July

Claude and I attended the New Milton Town Partnership’s Craft Fare in the Memorial Hall, 70 stalls were displaying a variety of wares. These Craft Fares run by Alan Watson have proved to be very successful. The next one is on the 5th November.

We then visited the Bashley Flower Show, thankfully the weather cheered up in
the afternoon.

Arnewood School – New Forest Runners Triathlon – 17th July

The New Forest Runners triathlon, which took place at Arnewood School was very well attended. A great time was had by all and it was a real treat being asked to give out the trophies.

The League of Friends of Lymington New Forest Hospital – 25th July

I attended the League of Friends of the Lymington New Forest Hospital, AGM at St Thomas’ Church Hall, Lymington. The speaker was Dr Nigel Watson, senior partner, Arnewood practice. Dr Watson is the Chairman of the Commissioning Committee of the BMA and discussed the proposed changes in the NHS which will take place from 2013.

New Forest Show – Parkinsons stand – 28th July

I was asked to help out on the ‘Parkinson’s Stand’ and draw the raffle at the New Forest Show by my friend Sally. The New Forest Parkinson’s Group meet in Brockenhurst every month. This is the first time they have taken a stand at the Show which was very successful by raising the profile of the group and collected much needed funding to find a cure for
this terrible disease.

Andrew Tuddenham represents The Arnewood School to the Town Council

As Work Experience had started for everyone at the The Arnewood School Academy on the 4th July 2011 we all took different paths, well some few people did go to the same place as there friends but hey-ho. On the other hand the rest of the year 10′s went on different jobs by themselves like me. I went to the Town Council for 2 weeks but I didn’t just get stuck in the office for the whole 2 weeks no I stayed in there for 1 week .

On the first week I was with the Town Council I was with the Groundstaff and I shadowed Laurence Jenkins. Also on the second week of my Work Experience I came into the Town Hall and worked in an office and I was shadowing Elaine Reed who is the Administrator. I was sat a desk on a computer doing databases and Important letter but above all that I met the Mayoral year of New Milton (Cllr Valya Schooling) and I got the privilege of designing an invitation for her biggest event of her Mayor life and that’s the Mayor’s Civic Ball which she was very happy for me to do. I have met some amazing people who care about their work and I have got to know them too. If I ever did Work Experience again then I would choose this place again as I have gotten used to this job after only 2 weeks and liked it.

Mayors investiture

I am deeply honoured and thrilled to be elected your Mayor and First Citizen of New Milton. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Elaine Reed – Town Council administrator for her organisational skills and support in making my inauguration such a success last Friday. The Town was widely represented at the investiture in the Cricket Pavilion, Fernhill. Mayors of Christchurch and Ringwood Councillor Susan Spittle and Brian Terry and the deputy Mayor of Lymington Council, Cllr Jackie England, Citizen of the Year Phylis Englis, head masters of local schools Alastair Reid (Ballard School), Mr Humerstone (Arnewood School), representatives from the fire, police and numerous local organisations were also present.

The Students of Arnewood School provided and served the delicious canopies under the watchful eye of Paul Freeman.

Becoming Mayor gives me the opportunity as a Councillor to go out into the community and discover for myself all the many different activities that go on in the Town and to meet as many of its residents as possible. I have performed several varied and interesting civic duties to date. In the four weeks since becoming Mayor elect I have presided at the New Milton memorial clock ceremony on Station Road.

On Wednesday 18th May my husband Claude and I were invited to the Milton Musical Societies presentation of the Scarlet Pimpinel at the Regents Theatre, Christchurch where we were greeted by Alison Purch, their president. The production was fabulous.

I visited the newly refurbished Moorlands nursing home on Saturday 24th May and met the patients, their relatives and staff. The Moorlands nursing home looks after patients with Alzheimer’s and dementure. The care and devotion from the owners, manageress and staff is exceptional.

On Saturday 28th May I opened the new PMG school uniform shop also on Station Road.

In early June, Sunday 5th I attended the New Milton Royal British Legion branches lunch at Brockenhurst College to celebrate the Royal British Legions 90th anniversary. On the 9th June it was a great pleasure to meet exchange students and teachers from Moscow School 1208.

Most recently I attended the Rugby Club fun day which I enjoyed very much, it was great to see a number of young people enjoying themselves. The event including an “it’s a knockout” team challenge.  This morning I visited the 12th anniversary of New Milton Talking Newspaper which is run by volunteers and is something that means so much to many people unable to see in the New Forest. The talking newspaper allows those with limited sight to listen to the newspaper on recorded discs. For more information please see their website: http://www.r4u2.org.uk/page57.html

For the year ahead I look forward to attending more community events including the upcoming New Milton Pedal Car Grand Prix on the 10th July.  I look forward to seeing you there!

Community Speed Watch

I have recently met with our local police who want to introduce a speedwatch scheme in our town and surrounding parishes. This is an excellent idea which uses local volunteers in high profile locations to remind drivers of the speed limits which apply in our area and which may affect the safety of our friends and family if ignored. Nobody need be prosecuted but drivers will be informed that they have been seen speeding. Personally, I prefer this to a fine and points on my licence. I hope that enough people within our community will sign up as volunteers and I will be promoting the scheme through the Town Council. Anybody who wants further information on the scheme can contact PC Marco Marchiori of the New Milton Safer Neighbourhoods team. Please sign up if you can.

Planning Committee

I’d like to thank all those from Bashley Ward who once again voted for me and I am very happy to once again be the Town Councillor for Bashley. I have also been elected to the District Council along with Steve Davies to represent Milton Ward. Steve and I will shortly be introducing regular surgeries where we will be available to meet you and advise on any problems you might bring to us. I will update you as soon as more details are available.

I am also very pleased to have been elected as chair of the Town Council’s planning committee. Our committee welcomes anyone with matters to raise on planning issues and members of the public may speak on particular issues in which they have interest. I have introduced an information sheet for anyone attending which sets out the rules for public participation. With 5 new members the committee has some challenges ahead but we hope to continue representing the views of the town fairly and properly to the district council and look forward to seeing any of you who care to attend.
